Signage gone awry

Viel Spaß!!!! I was in New York at a Hampton Inn (it said it was a Times Square location, but it was more like Hell's Kitchen) when I snapped this picture-yes a little fuzzy, but you get the point.
Isn't this a little over kill in having a Hearing Impaired sign written in braille?
It reminds me of my first night in Flat Rock, NC when we visited the Food Lion and my boss caught me staring at the mangled handicapped parking sign that had obviously been hit and backed over and hit multiple times.  There was even concrete rubble remnants.
My boss then commented, "That person wasn't only handicapped, they were blind!"
Beyond taking keys away from grandma, maybe we do need signage like this, plus the braille on the highway with speed bumps and cat's eyes that make noise! _______________________ _________________________________

Insure or Ensure?

in this case, my gut says ensure but oh what a wonderful play of words!

From Peggy Gillespie Hazelwood's ehow.com article, How to Use Ensure vs Insure:

1.Look at the sentence you are writing. Know what it is you are trying to communicate. Read the sentence out loud.
2.Know the meaning of ensure. Ensure means to guarantee or to make sure, safe, or certain.
3.Know the meaning of insure. Insure means to provide insurance coverage on something or someone. Insure can also mean to make certain by taking action and precautions.
Decide which meaning you need to use to communicate.

Generally, in nearly all cases, if you are talking about insurance, that is, an insurance policy, the word choice is insure.

If you are talking generally about taking care of something or someone, the word is ensure.

Type Downtown Los Angeles

After  living in Los Angeles, over the last decade, the past three years have created my so called crush of downtown.
While headed to the last bookstore on Main, I saw these two old storefronts a block or so away.
As a prop and scene painter in the past, I really appreciate the sign painting and difference in type. _______________________ _________________________________

Trailer Trash, Nomad Lab, One World and a Spartan Mansion

CalArts One World conference started off with a bang starting the morning with an opener/talk from Sam Breen and the City of Santa Clarita. He started with a slide show presenting his story and recent purchase of a Spartan Mansion.  It was an honest talk where he asked the big question of So What's Next? and recognizing that Now the true work starts in learning to become an artist post grad/post art school. 

Sam Breen talked of  his Trailer Trash project and Nomad Lab. Bitter-lemons wrote about Sam's adventures and plans for this trailer.   He presented his contribution to the community outreach happening in Santa Clarita and Nomad Lab presenting arts for a safe neighborhood.  The question of home and community came up and the kids were encouraged to put to paper how they felt.--one aspect of the Spartan 

The other aspect of the trailer is that Sam hopes to have traveling performance and interaction.

I didn't get to see all that went on last weekend with the trailer, but the evolution and interaction I witnessed with a movement piece was amazing!  Like Brigadoon, the trailer magically appeared and evolved as platforms rose, later a tarp and lights appeared, inviting more audience and the lower right picture shows the magic hour of light and theatre outside on the lawn of CalArts Saturday evening.
